Hull/Deck
High
The wooden compression post support block under the mast step is prone to rot from bilge water exposure. Early boats used white oak fiberglassed in place; check for softness by probing. Catalina sells aluminum replacement blocks.
High
Chainplate deck penetrations leak as the sealant gap is too narrow to flex with rig loads. Water migrates into the balsa core around the chainplates, causing localized deck softness that is easy to miss without a moisture meter.
Medium
Balsa-cored deck delaminates around hardware penetrations — stanchion bases, cleats, and winch mounts — when bedding compound fails. Tap-test thoroughly; re-bedding alone won't fix saturated core.
Keel
High
Non-stainless keel bolts on earlier boats corrode internally, causing rust to leach through the fairing compound and produce the notorious Catalina smile — a visible separation at the forward edge of the keel-to-hull joint. Ultrasound the bolts on any pre-purchase survey.
Rigging
Low
The boat develops pronounced weather helm as it heels, a known design trait of the hull shape. Adjusting mast rake aft and keeping the traveler active helps manage it, but it's inherent to the design.
