Hull/Deck
High
Balsa-cored deck areas around chainplates, stanchion bases, and other hardware are prone to water intrusion and core rot when fasteners are not properly bedded. Tap-test the deck thoroughly around all hardware penetrations.
Medium
Bottom blistering is common on hulls that were never barrier-coated with epoxy. Catalina did not apply epoxy barrier coats from the factory during most of this model's production run.
Low
Pop-top hatch gasket deteriorates with UV exposure and age, eventually allowing drips at the seal. Replacement gaskets are available from Catalina Direct, and the fix is straightforward.
Keel
High
Swing keel cable fails at the fork fitting just inside the trunk where it cannot be visually inspected. A broken cable lets the keel free-fall, which can crack the fiberglass trunk and shear internal hanger weldments off the hull.
Medium
Swing keel pivot pin wears over time, allowing the keel to rock laterally in the trunk and produce a rhythmic thumping at anchor. Catalina sells a nylon washer kit to take up the slop, but unchecked wear eventually damages the trunk walls.
Medium
If the keel cable is routed on the wrong side of the turning ball during replacement (should be the aft side), it cuts into the cable tube and creates a sharp edge that can shear the fork terminal on the next retraction.
Rigging
High
Rudder gudgeon and pintle hardware loosens from the transom over time. Check for stress cracks in the gelcoat around gudgeon mounting bolts and feel for play in the rudder when loaded.
Medium
Early production models used closed-body turnbuckles on the shrouds, which trap moisture and corrode invisibly from the inside. These should be replaced with open-body turnbuckles that allow visual inspection.
pre-1980 models
Medium
Chainplate knees can corrode where they pass through the deck, especially if the deck seal has been compromised. Inspect both above and below deck for discoloration or weeping.
