Accommodations
Low
Lifeline stanchions are only 24 inches tall — knee height on most adults — providing minimal security on deck. Consider upgrading to taller stanchions if planning offshore or night sailing.
Engine
Medium
The engine is mounted under the cockpit with a Walter V-drive due to the narrow hull and slack bilges. Access for routine servicing is extremely poor — oil changes, belt replacements, and impeller swaps are awkward at best.
Medium
The original single-cylinder Yanmar diesel (12 hp) is widely considered underpowered for a 30-foot full-keel boat, especially in adverse current or when docking. Many boats have been repowered; verify engine history.
Hull/Deck
High
The hull-to-deck joint is bonded with polyester putty but not through-bolted. If the adhesive bond deteriorates, there is no mechanical backup holding the joint together. Inspect the joint from inside the hull for any signs of separation or weeping.
High
Balsa-cored deck areas — especially the foredeck and cockpit sole — are prone to delamination and water saturation around hardware penetrations. Stanchion bases have washers but no backing plates from the factory, accelerating core damage under load.
Medium
Gelcoat crazing is common on the deck non-skid, hull liner, and cabin overhead. While mostly cosmetic, crazing in the non-skid can allow water into the balsa core if the cracks extend through the laminate.
Rigging
High
Chainplate backing plates were made of mild steel during a portion of the production run and corrode badly behind the fiberglass. Look for rust streaks, flaking, or bulges in the laminate around chainplate attachment points.
